The Taipei City Market Administration Office can be traced back to the livestock market established during the Meiji era of the Japanese government. In the early days after World War II, it was reorganized as the Taipei Livestock Company and was commissioned by the city government to handle livestock supply and marketing. To stabilize the livelihood of citizens, the city government formally established the Livestock Market Management Committee on April 1, 1951. Later, due to poor management, it was reorganized into the Livestock Market Management Office on April 1, 1955.
On August 1, 1973, to cooperate with the opening of the pig slaughterhouse and the establishment of a trading system on the price, the name of the organization was changed to Taipei City Meat Market Management Office. Until February 11, 1977, it merged with the Fifth Division (Market Management) and the Market Construction Unit of the Sixth Division of the Municipal Construction Bureau and was reorganized into the Taipei City Market Administration Office. In addition to operating the meat supply and marketing business, it was also responsible for the planning, construction, management, and providing advice for the wholesale markets and retail markets of fish, meat, fruits, and vegetables. On February 25, 1978, it also operated the newly established local poultry wholesale market. In July 1985, the local police department handed over the management of licensed vendors to the city. At the same time, the city adjusted the organization, adding the fourth section to be responsible for the registration, issuance, planning, and management of licensed vendors. The police station is still accountable for banning undocumented vendors and managing traffic obstructions and tranquility.
According to the provisions of the Agricultural Products Market Transaction Law, Taipei Livestock Products Marketing Corporation, which was co-funded by the Taipei City Government, the Taipei City Farmers' Association, and meat and poultry dealers, started to handle the management of the meat and poultry wholesale market and is subordinate to the Department of Economic Development of Taipei City on March 29, 1988.
To cope with the development of underground shopping malls in the city, the first division of the Taipei City Market Administration Office was approved to take over the underground shopping mall-related business in 1984. However, as the underground shopping malls were constructed and completed, the business volume continued to increase, and it was necessary to establish another division for comprehensive management. Therefore, the office related to underground shopping malls was changed to the "Fifth Division" after the third reading of the Taipei City Council in January 1988. The division was responsible for the planning, supervision, and management of underground shopping malls. The original division was changed to the "Administration Office" and officially took effect on July 1, 1988.
In addition to market management, the office also focused on the functional division of labor to improve administrative efficiency and service quality. On May 30, 2007, the Taipei City Council reviewed and approved the organization and establishment amendments. On September 11, 2007, the name was changed to the Taipei City Market Administration Office to meet the needs of business development, integrate market operations, adjust the business responsibilities of various departments, and revise the unit's name.
